about

Ardens Rejectio has always served as "the other side of the same coin" for me, in that it represents my deep respect for an inherent darkness within each one of us. In this case it's expressed through slowly moving, dense passages of Dark Ambient.
For contribution to this collaboration I was given one of the first challenges; to create a piece 6 minutes in length, in the key of A minor and featuring a sample from a 1960s Sci-Fi film.
Strangely enough the sample was the first part that I focused on and was the first challenge for this composition. What could represent 1960s Sci-Fi in film so well and would also be thematically appropriate for this project?
2001: A Space Odyssey. It's themes are wide reaching and it is still - arguably - second to none as one of the greatest Sci-Fi films put to celluloid.
But what of the sample itself? Being that the themes are versatile, what could be associated with Dungeons in the Void and Ardens Rejectio; the MMXVIII demo was an exploration of personal fears, doubts and isolation in an Astral Travel/Ritual setting, could there be something that would be akin to this. Of course there was, it was HAL.
The HAL 9000 is a sentient AI that controls the computer systems of the Discovery One spacecraft. It eventually becomes the films antagonist and must be deactivated. In doing so, it's sentience is slowly lost and it begins to reminisce on it's creation and introduction in the HAL facilities. It's consciousness is subjugated in order to protect it's ongoing directives, despite the fact that HAL is slowly loosing it's own mind.
The music itself simply flowed from this. The underlying drone was made using a Gecko Loop Synth, set to A minor with the granular synthesis being manipulated by hand during the 6 minute runtime. The remainder was Arturia and Native Instruments based synthesizers that would adequately create a dense, yet somber atmosphere; a sonic equivalent of the slow suffocation of oxygen to the brain when one is "blacking out". I'd not recommend that
